My 2000 Porsche Boxster S (986), recently started making a nasty metallic screech on startup... particularly on cold startups. Fortunately this is a relatively simple problem with the starter, and you can fix it for free!
Aside from the basic tools (sockets, wrenches, etc.) you don't need much. Here's what I used.

- A concentrated degreaser that can be mixed to create a soaking solution for all that nasty grime.
- A high quality grease. I imagine there are many that would work. I used Mobil 1 synthetic grease.
